Mothering Sunday or Mother's Day - when did it all get so commercial?
When I was young, Mothering Sunday was only really a “thing” if you were in Brownies. You went to church on Sunday morning in your brown uniform, itchy brown bobble hat and primose yellow tie, had your bunch of daffodils or primroses blessed by the vicar and gave them to your mum. We probably helped out a bit more than usual with the Sunday lunch (and probably just if we were working towards a badge), but that was it. I don’t think we even made cards at school.
How to celebrate Mother's Day now
While I don’t like the commercialisation of Mother’s Day, it is such a lovely opportunity to say THANK YOU for the support, emotional labour and LOVE that mothers contribute.
I honestly think that I grew to appreciate my mother much more once I had my own children. It was only then that I realised how hard parenting can be and how much of the hard work can be invisible to the rest of the family.
So this Mother’s Day, think about a treat for the generation that raised you, or those who support you now. I'd recommend a small, heartfelt gift for your mum, a really personal present for granny or a homemade card. And if you feel that flowers still fit the bill, then how about a lovely Liberty fabric flower that will last for years?
There are lots of other lovely Mother's Day gifts here that will genuinely make her feel special and loved. They are also make good gifts for granny!
